The Master of International Commercial and Business Law is open to both law and non-law applicants and allows you to deepen your understanding of business and commercial law in a global context. This course does not qualify you to be a lawyer.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must have one of the following:

  • Completed Australian doctorate, or overseas equivalent, in any field of study.
  • Completed Australian bachelor's degree or Australian master’s degree, or overseas equivalent, in any field of study with a minimum GPA of 4.5/7.
  • Completed Australian bachelor's degree or Australian master’s degree, or overseas equivalent, in any field of study with a minimum GPA of 3.8/7 AND Capacity to study demonstrated through relevant professional work experience.
  • Completed Australian bachelor's degree or Australian master’s degree, or overseas equivalent, in any field of study with a minimum GPA between 3.3 and 3.79/7 AND Completed graduate certificate or graduate diploma with a minimum GPA of 4.5/7.
  • Completed UTS Graduate Diploma in Business Administration.
  • Completed UTS Graduate Certificate in Business Administration with a minimum GPA of 5/7.

Applicants who have completed an unspecified non-UTS graduate certificate or graduate diploma will be only considered if they have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree with the required GPA.

Supporting documentation to be submitted with the application

For applicants who need to demonstrate work experience, you need Curriculum vitae and a Statement of Service in one of the following formats:

  • A 'Statement of Service' is provided by the employer.
  • A completed 'UTS Statement of Service’ signed by the employer.
  • A statutory declaration confirming work experience (for Australian residents only).
  • An official letter from the applicant’s accountant or solicitor on their company letterhead confirming the applicant’s work experience or engagement with the business, duration of operations and the nature of the business.
  • A business certificate of registration in the original language and English (e.g. provision of ASIC documentation or ABN or similar documentation for Australian businesses).

English language requirements

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL iBT: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Students who successfully complete the Master of International Commercial and Business Law may apply for 24 credit points of elective credit to be applied to the Juris Doctor, the Master of Legal Studies or the Master of Laws.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:

  • Utilise an advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of legal knowledge relating to international business and commercial law, including the Australian legal system, laws and regulatory frameworks.
  • Integrate and apply principles and approaches to ethical decision-making and professional responsibility, including the ability to respond independently to ethical challenges, recognising, reflecting and responding to issues with professional judgment.
  • Generate appropriate theoretical and practical responses to problems and questions in law and policy, applying advanced legal research skills, critical analysis and evaluation.
  • A well-developed understanding of Indigenous perspectives is informed by a commitment to building Indigenous cultural capability and working for and with Indigenous peoples. Identify and challenge the deficit narratives and biases of Anglo-Australian laws towards Indigenous Australians, particularly in relation to intellectual property and cultural rights.
  • Generate solutions to complex legal issues through effective collaboration, negotiation and leadership and communicate accurately and persuasively in multidisciplinary contexts with a variety of audiences.

Estimated tuition fee per session in 2025: $17,125 (domestic full-fee paying place)

The estimated fee is calculated based on a study load of 24 credit points per session.

Tuition fees are charged:

  • Based on the particular course in which you are enrolled.
  • Based on the number of credit points you are enrolled in,
  • At the rates set for the current year and revised annually.

In addition to tuition fees, students are required to pay a Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). The purchase of textbooks and other course materials may also result in additional costs.
