Make innovation part of how your organisation operates. The University of Sydney’s Innovation Strategy Sprint explores how to embed innovation in business processes, team practices and strategic planning. Delivered in partnership with Atlassian, the course introduces frameworks for identifying opportunities and aligning innovation with your organisation’s goals and existing strengths.

Across four modules, you’ll explore opportunities in products, processes, networks and business models. Learn how to prioritise initiatives, balance risk and return and create roadmaps for implementation. You’ll also examine the team dynamics, leadership approaches and measurement systems that help sustain innovation over time.

The sprint combines self-paced online learning with three live online sessions, supported by videos, readings, workbook activities and cohort discussions. Apply your learning through a final project that addresses a real organisational challenge, creating an innovation strategy plan with implementation priorities and measures of progress. Following review of your final project, you’ll receive a University of Sydney digital badge.

Module 1

What is innovation strategy?

  • Explore how innovation strategy differs from innovation theatre – prioritising the appearance of innovation over its substance. Learn to identify innovation opportunities across the business, examine competitors’ directions to find unexplored opportunities and translate strategic ambitions into actions with measurable targets. This module also examines how to align innovation with your organisation’s existing strategic advantage.

Module 2

What does it mean for your team?

  • Examine the team dynamics that sustain innovation, including the shift from static teams to dynamic teaming. Explore how constructive disagreement can test ideas and how psychological safety supports productive conflict. You’ll also examine temporary competitive advantage and learn to manage a portfolio of competitive opportunities through a structured innovation lifecycle.

Module 3

How do we do innovation strategy?

  • Learn how to create an innovation strategy that evolves with your organisation. Explore how tools shape strategic thinking and how narrative skills can help bring teams along when innovation changes direction. This module also examines how digital collaboration platforms can involve partners, suppliers and broader business networks in the strategic process.

Module 4

Succeeding at innovation strategy

  • Explore the measurement, leadership and learning systems that sustain innovation over time. Learn a framework for measuring innovation at different stages and examine three layers of innovation leadership – entrepreneurial, enabling and architecting. You’ll also investigate common implementation failures and practical ways to address them.

How will you learn

Learn through four self-paced online modules featuring videos from University of Sydney Business School academics and Atlassian experts, additional readings, practical workbook activities and cohort discussions. Set aside around 30–60 minutes a day over two weeks to work through the core content.

Join three live interactive online sessions to explore the course concepts with your sprint leaders and peers. Sessions are recorded so you can revisit them or catch up at a time that suits you. Optional networking events provide opportunities to connect with your cohort.

Throughout the sprint, you’ll work towards a final project addressing a real organisational challenge. Create an innovation strategy plan that identifies opportunities, sets out implementation priorities and proposes measures to track progress. You’ll retain access to the modules after the sprint, allowing you to return to the additional learning activities.
