Course overview

The Master of Professional Accounting develops advanced conceptual and applied skills for professional accounting in a rapidly changing global business environment. Students build technical accounting expertise alongside capabilities in ethics, technology and responsible professional practice.

Designed with industry input, the course explores contemporary areas including financial crime, artificial intelligence, blockchain and data visualisation. Students can also investigate real-world financial crime alongside industry partners through Swinburne's KordaMentha Financial Crime Lab.

The course provides pathways towards professional accounting recognition and is accredited by CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ), AACSB International and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA). Graduates may also be eligible to apply for membership with other recognised professional accounting bodies.

Students complete 16 units totalling 200 credit points. The course comprises four foundation units, eight core units and four specialisation or elective units, allowing students to tailor part of their studies towards an area of professional interest.

The standard duration is two years full time or equivalent part time at Hawthorn. Swinburne also promotes accelerated pathways for eligible students.

What you will study

To qualify for the award of Master of Professional Accounting, students must complete 16 units (equivalent to 200 credit points) comprising:

  • Four foundation units
  • Eight core units
  • Four specialisation or elective units

Each unit is worth 12.5 credit points.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to have completed one of the following:

  • A recognised bachelor's degree in any discipline.
  • A Graduate Certificate of Professional Accounting (for students without a recognised bachelor's degree).

English language requirements

All Swinburne students must be able to meet the English language requirements. You’ll be able to provide evidence of your English language skills if you have one of the following:

  • IELTS Academic overall 6.5, with no individual band below 6.0.
  • Swinburne English for Academic Purposes (EAP 5 Advanced) with an overall result of 70%, with all skills 65% or above.
