Course overview

The Master of Finance develops knowledge across finance, banking, investment and analysis while incorporating emerging areas shaping the finance industry. The program covers FinTech, artificial intelligence, blockchain, cybersecurity, alternative investments, business analytics and sustainability. Students also gain applied experience through two industry-led capstone projects in Finance and FinTech.

Employment opportunities include financial analyst and managerial roles across finance, financial technology, stockbroking, insurance, project management and the broader finance industry.

The Master of Finance is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. Swinburne states that only the top six per cent of business schools worldwide are AACSB accredited.

The Master of Finance is also affiliated with the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program. The course incorporates at least 70% of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK), with an emphasis on the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to have completed one of the following:

  • A bachelor's degree (or higher award) in any discipline from a recognised higher education institution or equivalent.
  • Graduate Diploma of Finance.
  • Graduate Certificate of Finance.

Applicants who have additional qualifications may be eligible to enter the program with advanced standing and may be able to complete the program in less than two years.

One-year duration (full-time, or equivalent part-time)

Applicants who have completed one of the following may be able to complete the program in one year of full-time study (or equivalent part-time study):

  • The Graduate Certificate of Finance.
  • An honours bachelor's degree in a related discipline.

1.5-year duration (full-time, or equivalent part-time)

Applicants who have completed one of the following may be able to complete the program in 1.5 years of full-time study (or equivalent part-time study):

  • A bachelor's degree in a related discipline.
  • A graduate certificate in a related discipline.
  • A bachelor's degree (or higher award) in any discipline and two years of relevant work experience.

Relevant professional/managerial experience and evidence of academic capability will be determined by the Head of Academic Unit (or delegate) with reference to School-determined guiding principles. Applicants will be required to submit a curriculum vitae (CV) with their application.

Documents substantiating relevant experience are required, clearly detailing roles and duration, as well as evidence of formal and non-formal learning. Where relevant experience is used as the basis of admission, no further recognition for prior learning/credit can be granted on that basis.
