What you will study

To complete the Master of Economics, you must fulfil 96 credit points.

Master's entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:

  • If you are admitted at entry level 1 you must complete 96 credit points, comprising Part A, Part B and Part C
  • If you are admitted at entry level 2 you must complete 72 credit points, comprising Part B and Part C
  • If you are admitted at entry level 3 you must complete 48 credit points, comprising Part B.

Note: Students eligible for credit for prior studies may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.

The course is structured in three parts.

Part A. Advanced preparatory

You must complete one unit from each of the following four pairs of units.

  • Mathematics for Business OR Mathematics for Economics and Business
  • Macroeconomic Policy OR Macroeconomics
  • Managerial Economics OR Microeconomics
  • Introductory Econometrics OR Introductory Econometric
Part B. Mastery knowledge
Part C. Application studies

Entry requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course, minimum requirements include:

For entry level one, with 96 points to complete and a duration of two years full time or four years part time:

  • An Australian bachelor's degree (or equivalent), with at least a high credit (65%) average or an equivalent GPA.

For entry level two, with 72 points to complete and a duration of one and a half years full time or three years part time:

Applicants must have one of the following:

  • An Australian bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline with at least a high credit (65%) average or equivalent qualification and experience approved by the faculty.
  • An Australian bachelor's degree (or equivalent) and an Australian graduate certificate (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline with at least a high credit (65%) average in both qualifications or equivalent qualification and experience approved by the faculty.
  • A four-year Australian bachelor honours degree (or equivalent) with at least a high credit (65%) average or equivalent qualification and experience approved by the faculty.

For entry level three, with 48 points to complete and a duration of one year full time or two years part time:

  • An Australian bachelor honours degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline with at least a high credit (65%) average or equivalent qualification and experience approved by the faculty.

Students wishing to undertake the research pathway must maintain at least a distinction grade (70%) average and be accepted for entry by the Course Director.

Cognate disciplines include Business, Commerce, Economics, Econometrics and Management.

English language requirements

To enter Monash University, you must meet the minimum English language requirements. You can do this by completing one of the qualifications listed on their website.

If you've completed several measures of English proficiency over a period of time, the highest valid measure will be accepted as long as it's been taken within the required time limitations.

These course outcomes are aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework level 9 and Monash Graduate Attributes.

Upon successful completion of this course, it is expected that you will:

  • Be critical and creative scholars who produce innovative solutions to problems, apply research skills to business challenges and communicate effectively and perceptively.
  • Be responsible and effective global citizens who engage in an internationalised world, exhibit cross-cultural competence and demonstrate ethical values.
  • Demonstrate broad knowledge and technical skills in the area of their specialisation and be able to provide discipline-based solutions relevant to the business, professional and public policy communities that serve. In particular, Economics graduates will have an extensive knowledge of theoretical and applied economics. Graduates will have the skills and knowledge required to participate in economic policy design and decision-making in the public sector, the private sector or the higher education sector.
  • Have advanced knowledge to master's level in the specialisation.

Fees and FEE-HELP

Average 2025 first-year fee: $37,100 (domestic full-fee paying place)

All costs are calculated using current rates and are based on a study load of 24 credit points (normally four units) per semester or 48 credit points (normally eight units) per year.
A student’s annual fee may vary in accordance with:

  • The number of units studied per term. 
  • The choice of major or specialisation.
  • Choice of units. 
  • Credit from previous study or work experience.
  • Eligibility for government-funded loans.
