Course overview
This coursework and research program in finance is designed for high-achieving students who intend to pursue a PhD in finance. The course involves undertaking research methodology training and carrying out independent research projects in banking and finance, working closely with a supervisor who will provide you with individual guidance and academic counselling.
The course is the compulsory pathway to the PhD programme in finance. Students intending to pursue the five-year PhD program in finance will be given priority during selection. Upon successful completion of the Master of Commerce, displaying exceptional proficiency, students progress to the PhD program in finance (three years).

To complete the Master of Commerce, you must earn 96 credit points.
The course is structured in two parts:
Part A. Research Studies
You must complete the following units
- Research Skills
- Corporate Finance and Intermediation Theory
- Empirical Corporate Finance and Banking
- Econometrics for Finance
- Asset Pricing Theory
- Empirical Asset Pricing and Investments
- Research in Finance
Part B. Advanced Research Studies
You must complete the following units and one Level 5 elective unit (six credit points)
- Advanced Asset Pricing
- Advanced Corporate Finance
- Advanced Behavioural Finance
- Research Project 1
- Research Project 2
Note: You may need permission from the owning faculty to enrol in some units taught by other faculties.
Entry requirements
Entry level 1: 96 credit points
Duration: Two years full time, Four years part time
- An Australian bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline*. A distinction grade average (70%) or above for four units (24 points) in a relevant discipline* at level three is required.
Entry level 2: 48 credit points
Duration: One year full time, Two years part time
- An Australian bachelor honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline* with a grade average of at least (75%), or equivalent qualification approved by the faculty.
*Relevant disciplines include Accounting, Banking and Finance, Economics, Econometrics and Business Statistics, Health Economics, Management, Marketing and related cognate disciplines including Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Psychology, Sociology and other Social Sciences.
English language requirements
To enter Monash University, you must meet the minimum English language requirements. You can do this by completing one of the qualifications listed on their website.
If you've completed several measures of English proficiency over a period of time, the highest valid measure will be accepted as long as it's been taken within the required time limitations.

Extra requirements
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview with a panel constituted by the Course Coordinator. Admission is a competitive process.
Completion of the Master of Commerce Supplementary Form is also required and applicants may be requested to attend an interview with the discipline Coordinator.

Average 2025 first-year fee: $37,100 (domestic full-fee paying place)
All costs are calculated using current rates and are based on a study load of 24 credit points (normally four units) per semester or 48 credit points (normally eight units) per year.
A student’s annual fee may vary in accordance with:
