Are you a finance professional looking to progress your career pathways in quantitative finance? This double degree will grow your understanding of global financial markets and investment and your specialist skills in:

It will give you a unique edge in investment banking, portfolio management, risk management, quantitative trading and research.

Over the course of this two-year double degree, you’ll advance your training in econometrics and quantitative analysis to solve finance and economic challenges. This includes building on your ability to critically analyse, solve problems and develop innovative solutions to a range of contemporary business issues – especially those that influence the finance industry.

The program will sharpen your understanding of financial markets and investments, valuation, trading and risk management, as well as ethics, environmental and corporate social responsibility. You’ll also have the chance to explore in-depth investment banking, asset management and financial technology and sustainability.

With so much of the industry influenced by quantitative data and modelling, you’ll gain a critical edge through specialist training across in-demand econometric skills, including empirical modelling, forecasting data analysis and more. What you will study

To complete the Master of Applied Econometrics and Master of Applied Finance double degree, you must complete 16 units (96 credit points). It consists of a Master of Advance Finance component (48 credit points) and a Master of Applied Econometrics component (48 credit points).

Master of Advanced Finance

Part A. Mastery knowledge

a. Core units (30 credit points)

You must complete the following

  • Financial Statement Analysis and Business Valuation (six credit points)
  • Funds Management (six credit points) 
  • Case Studies in Finance (six credit points)
  • Advanced Foundations of Finance (six credit points)
  • Quantitative and Data Analysis in Python (six credit points)

b. Specialist studies (18 credit points)

You must complete three units (18 credit points) from one of the following specialist studies.

Investment banking

You must complete the Mergers and acquisitions (six credit points) and two further units (12 credit points) from this specialist study.

  • Infrastructure and Project Finance (six credit points)
  • Applied Derivatives (six credit points)
  • Mergers and Acquisitions (six credit points)

Asset management

You must complete Applied derivatives (six credit points) and two further units (12 credit points) from this specialist study.

Financial technology and sustainability

You must complete Fintech (six credit points) and Sustainable Finance (six credit points) and one further unit (six credit points) from this specialist study.

Master of Applied Econometrics

Entry requirements

Applicants must have one of the following:

  • An Australian bachelor's degree (or equivalent) with a major or minor* in finance with at least a high credit (65%) average or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA) and must have passed a first year statistics or mathematics unit or equivalent.
  • An Australian bachelor's degree (or equivalent) and having passed the Level 1 CFA examination or equivalent membership of a recognised professional finance program.

*A minor is at least four units (equivalent to 24 Monash credit points).

English language requirements

For entry to Monash University, you must meet the minimum English language requirements. You can do this by completing one of the qualifications listed on their website.

If you've completed several measures of English proficiency over a period of time, the highest valid measure will be accepted as long as it's been taken within the required time limitations.

    • Applied econometrics graduates also demonstrate specialist knowledge in subjects related to econometrics to progress towards professional careers in private, public or institutional sectors as economists or consultants.
  • Have advanced knowledge to master's level in the specialisation.

Master of Advanced Finance

Fees and FEE-HELP

Average 2025 first-year fee: $37,100 (domestic full-fee paying place)

All costs are calculated using current rates and are based on a study load of 24 credit points (normally four units) per semester or 48 credit points (normally eight units) per year.

A student’s annual fee may vary in accordance with:

  • The number of units studied per term.
  • The choice of major or specialisation.
  • Choice of units.
  • Credit from previous study or work experience.
  • Eligibility for government-funded loans.
