What you will study

The Master of Human Resource Management is typically eight or 12 credit points. The exact number of credit points you study depends on how much credit you receive as Recognition of Prior Learning – your professional experience and previous qualifications – which can save you time and money.

For students undertaking 12 credit points, you will study eight credit points of core units and four credit points of elective units (which may include an optional faculty-wide specialisation. You must also complete the compulsory Academic Integrity Module in your first trimester of study (zero credit point unit).

Students who wish to enter the AHRI Practising Certification (APC) program are advised that it is their responsibility to ensure that they take the appropriate units required for entry.

Entry requirements

Selection is based on a holistic consideration of your academic merit, work experience, likelihood of success, availability of places, participation requirements, regulatory requirements and individual circumstances. You must meet the minimum academic and English language proficiency requirements to be considered for selection, but this does not guarantee admission.

Academic requirements

To be considered for admission to this degree, you will need to meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree in a related discipline.
  • Completion of a bachelor's degree in any discipline and at least two years of relevant work experience (or part-time equivalent).*

Definition of minimum work experience includes at least two years (full-time equivalent) in a managerial role with people management responsibilities or in a human resource professional role.

English language requirements

To meet the English language proficiency requirements of this course, you will need to demonstrate at least one of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree from a recognised English-speaking country.
  • IELTS overall score of 6.5 (with no band score less than 6.0) or equivalent.
  • Other evidence of English language proficiency (contact the university for more information).

Recognition of Prior Learning

Deakin University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior study or informal learning which exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course and is within the constraints of the course regulations. Students are required to complete a minimum of one-third of the course at Deakin University, or four credit points, whichever is greater. In the case of certificates, including graduate certificates, a minimum of two credit points within the course must be completed at Deakin.

Note: Recognition of Prior Learning into the Master of Human Resource Management may be granted to students who have completed appropriate postgraduate studies in a related discipline. However, it cannot be granted on the basis of relevant work experience alone as this is a requirement of entry. It may be considered on a case-by-case basis in addition to formal postgraduate level equivalent learning.

Applicants who have completed the AHRI Practising Certification Program (2016-current) may be eligible for up to four credit points of Recognition of Prior Learning.

All costs are calculated using current rates and are based on a full-time study load of eight credit points (normally eight units) per year.
