Course overview

The Master of Laws in Australian Law and Practice has been designed for overseas-trained lawyers who intend to practise law in Australia and are required by the Legal Practitioners Admission Board to study Australian law subjects to ensure equivalent knowledge to Australian-trained law graduates.

Completing the Master of Laws in Australian Law and Practice will provide you with a pathway to practise as a legal practitioner in Australia while also qualifying for a postgraduate degree.

The degree is an 80-credit point program (total of 8 subjects) completed over two semesters, which is tailored to your needs.  Your subjects in the Master of Laws in Australian Law and Practice will comprise those subjects necessary to meet the requirements of the Legal Practitioners Admission Board (up to a maximum of 8 subjects), together with postgraduate elective law subjects of your choice, to ensure you complete 80 credit points in total.

Suppose you intend to practise in Australia upon completing the Master of Laws in Australian Law and Practice. In that case, you can apply to study the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP) (also known as practical legal training (PLT).  The GDLP program at Bond University prepares you for admission to legal practice.

Entry Requirements

Admission Criteria

  • Students who have had their international law degrees assessed by an Australian Legal Practitioners Board and have been advised which areas of knowledge under the Priestly 11 they are required to complete in order to be eligible to apply for admissions as legal practitioners in Australia.

Recognition of Prior Learning

If you have completed previous tertiary studies, you may be able to gain credit for previous subjects. To apply, you will need to submit your academic transcripts to the Office of Future Students, including detailed subject outlines or course descriptions for each relevant subject.   • Demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge that includes (a) the Australian legal system and underlying principles and concepts; (b) the fundamental areas of legal knowledge, including contemporary developments in law and legal practice; (c) the global legal framework and its relationship with domestic law; (d) law’s theoretical foundations; (e) the professional practice of law, including ethical legal practice; (f) a range of specialised legal topics, including recent developments in legal scholarship and professional practice; and (g) legal research principles and methods.
  • Demonstrate competency in the exercise of professional legal skills, including an ability to (a) engage in legal reasoning and problem-solving, as well as sophisticated critical and creative thinking about law, legal issues and legal problems; (b) conduct research into legal, factual and policy issues and evaluate, synthesise and apply the results of that research; (c) engage in legal writing for both legal and non-legal audiences that are effective, appropriate and persuasive; (d) engage in oral communication for both legal and non-legal audiences that are effective, appropriate and persuasive.
  • Demonstrate the legal reasoning, research and communication skills to (a) reflect critically on legal theory and professional practice; (b) investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories and apply established theories to different bodies of knowledge or practice; (c) generate and evaluate complex ideas and concepts at an abstract level; (d) justify and interpret theoretical propositions, methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions to specialist and non-specialist audiences; and (e) design, evaluate, implement, analyse and theorise about developments that contribute to legal scholarship and professional practice.
